How did I get into traveling?

In 2010 I made a thirty day trip to Europe. My first stop on the trip was Barcelona, Spain. I stayed in a cozy hostel named “Itaca” in the heart of the city, a minute walk from one of the city’s most famous cathedrals, Main Façade. One morning in the hostel I was looking for table to eat breakfast at, I asked a fellow traveler if she minded if I joined her. Little did I know how much that one breakfast would have an immence affect on the rest of my life. She politely accepted my request to sit down and join her. We began comparing trips and I told her how I was going to take a cruise along the Mediterranean coast and then backpack some of Eastern Europe. She then told me how she had saved up $25,000 and was taking a trip around the world hitting every continent over the course of a year. I couldn’t believe my ears. How could she save up that much money, leave her life back home, and her family and loved ones? It sounded like the ultimate adventure of a lifetime, a dream, and nearly impossible.

Fast forward a few years. I was about to graduate college and I was at an all-time low. I had just come out-of-the-closet to my family and slowly coming to terms with my sexuality. It was a very difficult time for me and needed something big to look forward to. I remembered that breakfast in Spain with the solo female traveler at Hostel Itaca and I thought to myself, why not? Why couldn’t I plan an adventure like that? I was tired of dreaming about all the things I want to do and experience, it was time to start making memories out of my bucket list.

Fifty countries and five continents  later and I can’t get enough of the world. Who would have guessed a brief encounter with a fellow traveler would have led me to through the jungles of the Amazon in Ecuador, learning to free dive in Panama, lantern festivals in Taiwan, cage diving with great white sharks in South Africa, tomato festivals in Spain, riding elephants in Thailand, sand boarding down the slopes of the Sahara dessert, hang gliding over Rio De Janeiro, and wittnessing one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 21st century in southern Chile, just to name just a few of the highlights.
